The creativity began at 9:35 am in the Children's
craft area of the Oceanside Public Library as the
excited children and their parents ran to the festively
decorated tables to begin creating their masterpieces.
The children made tissue paper flowers and flags.
They also colored and applied feathers to the picture
of the Sarimanok, legendary bird of the Maranao, people
who originate from Maranao, a major island in the
Phillipines. One of the big treats of the day for
the children was the gift of a micro-flute brought
directly from the Phillipines for each child to receive.
The joyous sound of flutes filled the air, as the
happy children made music. Children's librarians read
Filipino stories to the children, including the heart
warming book titled "The Mats", written
by Francisco Arcellana. The pride and joy was evident
in the children's faces as they walked away from the
craft area, clutching their works of art to share
with the rest of the family!
